Position Overview:

We are looking for a skilled Television Broadcast Engineer to support the technical aspects of our television broadcasting operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our broadcast facilities, maintaining equipment, troubleshooting technical issues, and implementing new technologies to enhance our production capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain television broadcast equipment, including cameras, switchers, audio consoles, routers, servers, and transmission systems.
  • Set up and configure broadcast systems for live and recorded productions, ensuring optimal performance and quality.
  • Monitor on-air signals and troubleshoot technical issues as they arise, taking prompt corrective action to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and inspections of broadcast equipment, performing repairs and upgrades as needed to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Manage the maintenance of systems associated with the station including but not limited to HVAC, generators, satellite dishes, electrical hardware, radar systems.
  • Assist in the installation and integration of new broadcast equipment and systems, including testing and commissioning.
  • Keep abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends in television broadcasting, recommending upgrades and improvements to enhance our capabilities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records, and logs of broadcast equipment, configurations, and maintenance activities.
  • Provide technical support and training to staff and production teams as needed, ensuring proper operation and utilization of broadcast equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in television broadcasting or broadcast engineering preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting broadcast equipment and systems, including cameras, switchers, audio consoles, routers, and transmission systems.
  • Strong technical skills in video and audio production, signal processing, and transmission technologies.
  • Experience with broadcast automation systems, graphics systems, and non-linear editing systems is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and protocols, such as SMPTE, ATSC, and SDI.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including severe weather events, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required in a broadcast environment.

WAAY-TV, the 2022 and 2023 Alabama Television Station of the Year, is looking for an outstanding individual and on-air performer to join the weather department as Meteorologist. Top candidates must have superior skills for forecasting and on-air presentation while being a positive part of an outstanding team of Meteorologists in a beautiful, rapidly growing market. This market is known for its breaking weather. WAAY-TV is home to the nation’s largest privately owned radar network and the region’s most advanced weather tracking unit, providing the ability to produce and deliver weather reports live on location. Involvement in community and appearances at station-sponsored events is necessary.

Sustained, breaking weather experience is a preferred, delivering high-quality information on-air, on digital, social and through the OTT stream. This individual is expected be a leader in the newsroom dedicated to professional growth and leadership. The ideal candidate should possess skills necessary to become engaged on social media, realizing the importance of leading in weather coverage both on-air and on-line. Live shots, presentations to students and groups, and interaction with those we serve at station-sponsored events throughout the DMA is an expectation. Knowledge of Weather Company (IBM) system tools, WSI Max, and possessing the ability to enhance graphics and maps while providing exceptional live reporting skills from the field are necessary.

 

Requirements include:

  • BA/BS degree in meteorology, science or equivalent
  • Experience as an on-air meteorologist highly preferred
  • AMS/NWA seal is preferred; otherwise, we will assist you in obtaining your seal
  • Outstanding communication and technical skills various weather programs
