View Job DetailsAs the Assistant News Director, you will play a vital role in supporting the News Director in overseeing all aspects of news, weather, and sports programming production. In the absence of the News Director, you will step in to lead. This position involves managing daily news operations, strategizing targeted content, analyzing audience engagement, and working collaboratively with creative services, sales, production, and other departments. Together with the News Director, you will foster a positive and energetic work environment that emphasizes clear communication, accountability, high journalistic standards, and strong teamwork. You will also coordinate breaking news and significant event coverage while implementing strategies for continuous improvement. We are looking for a hands-on leader who is committed to enhancing ratings and expanding content across all platforms, while demonstrating sound judgment, high ethical standards, and a commitment to mentoring emerging journalists.
General Responsibilities:
- Manage various aspects of the News Department by recruiting, coaching, inspiring, and mentoring the team.
- Collaborate in planning staffing, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations.
- Participate in decision-making regarding hiring, evaluations, promotions, and terminations.
- Provide constructive critiques of daily newscasts to enhance coverage, correct errors, and offer feedback to staff. - Work alongside the News Director to nurture a culture of innovative reporting and effective breaking news coverage across all content platforms.
- Help create and implement strategic goals and compelling content.
- Analyze industry trends and respond to developments in the Designated Market Area (DMA).
- Ensure all on-air and online products comply with federal, state, and local laws, as well as First and Fourteenth Amendment standards.
- Collaborate closely with fellow management team members to develop and achieve departmental and station goals.
- Possess expertise in posting content to the station's websites.
- Actively participate in executing branding strategies and expanding the audience across all platforms.
- Foster teamwork, empowerment, and a culture of open, honest, servant leadership.
- Plan and execute coverage for significant events. - Address inquiries regarding coverage promptly.
Qualifications:
- Strong familiarity with the latest technological advancements in news gathering and production, as well as libel and privacy laws, journalistic ethics, and professional standards in broadcasting.
- Ability to listen actively and understand employee needs, facilitating effective communication and problem-solving.
- Demonstrated judgment and leadership skills to motivate and guide staff.
- Uphold and communicate the newsroom's philosophy and policies, shaping its vision and direction.
- Lead editorial meetings and manage the daily flow of content across various platforms.
- Be prepared to undertake additional responsibilities, as necessary.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in news management
- Minimum of 3 years of experience producing newscasts.
- Proven ability to serve as a servant leader within the TV and digital newsroom environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong understanding of journalistic ethics, libel, and privacy laws.
- Key traits include integrity, creativity, passion, compassion, positive energy, active listening, and engaging personality.
- Comprehensive knowledge of journalism standards, news media dynamics, and audience trends.
- Assist in supervising staff, providing regular feedback, and conducting performance appraisals for direct reports.
- Exceptional time management skills, proactive demeanor, and a strong work ethic. - Solid understanding of newsroom operations and equipment.
- Effective leadership skills to promote open dialogue, empower team members, and address conflicts directly.
- Familiarity with the ratings system for broadcasting

JOB SUMMARY:
WJRT-TV’s Sales Department has an immediate opening for a National Sales Assistant. The National Sales Assistant will assist the General Sales Manager in selling advertising to national clients, along with assistance as needed with local sales. This includes order management, handling preemptions, schedule changes, assistance with political advertising and reconciling billing discrepancies. Also, a big role in this position is responsible for paid programming on the station. This position requires outstanding organization skills and self-motivation. Responsibilities include coordination of maintenance of Wide Orbit Traffic and Wide Orbit Sales. Maintain national contracts. Ability to communicate effectively with the sales team, sales management, and a variety of clients. The candidate must have 3-5 years of TV sales experience with strong attention to detail. Handle multiple tasks under daily deadlines. Wide Orbit Media software, or other television media software experience is strongly preferred. Must be proficient in Microsoft office products. Provide administrative assistance to the Sales Managers and Account Executives. Process orders and revisions daily from clients. Match and filing contracts daily. Ensure proper position placement on the log for airing. Process pre-emptions daily. Check timing sheets for programs for TMP. Assist, when needed, processing and finalizing logs for TMP daily. Work with Accounts Receivable on payment notification for accounts. Process credits/refunds. Responsible for Paid Programming order input and updating calendars. Cross train with Traffic Manager duties. Help with Political orders and tracking. Uploading files into the FCC site.
This position reports directly to the General Sales Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Entering and maintaining orders, including digital campaigns utilizing station and vendor operating systems.
- Support Account Executives in overseeing and order entry.
- Other duties as assigned by the Sales Managers.
- Assist in creating marketing materials for client presentations and station initiatives.
- Prepare and submit sales and financial reports as directed.
SKILLS REQUIRED/QUALIFICATIONS:
- 1-2 years order entry.
- Sales-related experience preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite including Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook.
- Proficient in Google Suite of Products.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Detail oriented, quick learner and self-motivated.
- Pre-employment background check.
- Must be willing to reside in the DMA.

You must have the ability to act professionally and maintain control in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment; be accustomed to changing gears on constant breaking news, updating news, and continued coverage for our viewers.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create newscasts, select, research, and write content for live newscasts and digital platforms.
- Communicating, coordinating, and executing creative vision with a team of anchors, reporters, meteorologists, photographers, editors, and production staff.
- Build new content in unique and compelling ways using the many tools and technology available.
- Working knowledge of current events and community issues
- Enhance content with graphics, video research, and station branding.
- Oversee all aspects of content and presentation of the newscast.
- Ability to write, re-write, edit, and post to the station's web, social, and other digital platforms.
- Producer will be expected to update digital and social platforms as needed.
- Work closely with the news team for accurate and interesting news information on all platforms.
- The News Producer will oversee content quality and accuracy for their newscasts.
- Grow the station’s social and digital footprint, especially within key demographics.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years prior news producing experience and strong editorial skills
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in journalism, Broadcasting, or a related field.
- High level of communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent judgment
- Experience in a newsroom, the ability to remain calm under pressure
- Must possess exceptional organizational and writing skills
- Knowledge of web-based publishing
- Mindful of deadlines
- Ability to lead and make split-second decisions based upon knowledge of directives
- Must be self-motivated, have the ability to multi-task, and excel under intense deadlines and pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
- Experience with ENPS a plus
- Must know how to edit
- Excellent writing, spelling, grammar, and copy-editing skills.
- Ability to multi-task and coordinate several crews and responsibilities simultaneously.
- Ability to summarize information into easy-to-understand components.

- Must be available to work holidays and shifts that include nights, weekends, and overnights, and flexible with schedule to be available during breaking news.

THIS IS NOT AN ENTRY-LEVEL POSITION
This shift is currently for a Producer. This is a 24/7 operation and may require working overnights and/or weekends, as well as holidays.
The hours, shifts, and responsibilities are flexible and are subject to change at the News Director’s discretion. Involvement in station initiatives and station events is necessary. This is a full-time position offering competitive salaries with a competitive benefit package that includes medical, dental, and vision plans.
