Assistant News Director
WAAY-TV, ABC 31, serving North Alabama in the fast-growing Huntsville-Florence-Decatur market (Nielsen DMA 79), is seeking a motivated, sincere journalist to serve our award-winning News Department as Assistant News Director.
The qualified candidate should possess an honest passion for storytelling, the ability to teach and mentor young journalists and have a heart for service to this incredible region.
This ever-evolving and strong newsroom culture needs a person who is comfortable in assuming a leadership role, coaching news team members when applicable and demonstrating a personal commitment to continued professional growth and development.
The Assistant News Director will work closely with the other producers, reporters, anchors, and newsroom managers on daily news coverage, oversee and coordinate special coverage, committed to managing engaging newscasts while being proficient in creative writing, copy editing and enterprising stories.

- Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field

- Prior experience as a news manager
Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time position during regular business hours with the potential of extra time required to meet monthly deadlines and to fulfill obligations to critical projects. Compensation is based on experience. Benefit package eligible.

Meteorologist
WAAY-TV, the ABC affiliate in the Huntsville, Alabama market, has an opportunity for a high-energy, highly skilled Meteorologist to join our accomplished weather team. Huntsville was recently ranked as the nation’s Best Place to Live by U. S. News and World Report. This position provides the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art weather tools. The North Alabama region is an incredibly active weather market. WAAY-TV continues to invest in our weather department and is home to the country’s largest privately-owned radar network; three radars strategically positioned to cover all of North Alabama, from the Shoals in the western section of the market to the Sand Mountain region to the east. Huntsville is now Alabama’s largest city and is rapidly growing.
The ideal candidate must be able to produce and deliver a dynamic, compelling and understandable forecast during local newscasts on various digital platforms. You will become part of a true weather team that covers severe weather with urgency while being reassuring. Our meteorologists possess skills that allow for daily contribution to our digital platforms, including social media and WAAYTV.com. The person who joins our team must have a positive attitude and seek to be an ambassador for WAAY-TV by making personal appearances at community events. Other duties will be assigned based on experience. This meteorologist will be assigned to Saturday morning newscasts as well as our midday newscasts 2-3 days a week. As the candidate develops, will fill-in during weekday morning and evening newscasts and will work daily at some level with weather staff.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science required
- Minimum of two-years on-air experience as a Broadcast Meteorologist (Internships and college experience highly considered)
- Applicants should have, or be qualified to apply for, the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist or the AMS Seal
- Demonstrate ability to post forecasts, graphics, and related information to various digital media platforms
- Strong social media skills, including an active weather presence on Facebook and Instagram
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and calmly handle live, breaking news and weather situations and related events
- Write, edit, and report on weather and/or news from the field or inside the newsroom
- Be available to work a flexible schedule and fill-in when necessary

Production Assistant - FT
WAAY-TV in Huntsville has an immediate opening available for a Full-Time Production Assistant. Responsibilities include operation of television studio, control-room, and other production equipment - including but not limited to audio boards, character generator and related graphics software, studio cameras, microphones, studio lights, teleprompter, video editing systems assist in the production of news and programming, both live and recorded, for on-air and online presentations. Training is available. Must be available to work weekends and semi-flexible schedule.
A college degree is required with a preferred focus on Journalism or related form of writing. The right entry-level candidate will receive full consideration.
