Job Description:

KITV, Inc., the ABC affiliate in Honolulu, HI is looking for a dynamic and innovative multi-skilled journalist who wants to do it all – produce a newscast, edit video, and be a reporter who can write, shoot and edit in the field.   Perfect position for the journalist who thrives on deadlines and breaking news and enjoys being in control.  The ideal candidate must have great leadership skills and confidence.  As a producer and multi-skilled journalist, you focus on producing newscasts and stories that are compelling, factually correct, creative, and written in a clear, conversational manner.

Job Responsibilities:

The multi-skilled journalist must cultivate sources and contacts to produce compelling newscasts and produce enterprise stories as well as produce stories assigned by the station.

  • Gather and verify factual information to develop news stories
  • Produce vo, vosot, and video packages.
  • Shooting video and still photos as needed to illustrate stories
  • Editing, or assisting in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms
  • Innovative approach to maximizing existing tools and resources to enhance presentation.
  • Live reporting/Breaking News

Qualification Requirements:

  • Passion for producing compelling newscasts and engaging stories.
  • Excellent and quick writer who adheres to AP writing style.
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems (ENPS, BitCentral, etc.)
  • Knowledge of broadcast quality equipment including hand held cameras and non-linear editing equipment and programs (i.e. Edius, Premiere, etc.).
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • Must exercise sound editorial judgement with the high journalistic ethics and libel laws.
  • Must have valid Driver's License, good driving record and provide proof of insurability.

Education:

  • Four-year college Bachelor’s degree (journalism preferred)

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of experience working as a journalist inside a television newsroom.
  • Experience producing newscast, in-booth handling live broadcasts and breaking news.
  • Previous experience as a field journalist – shooting, writing, editing and on camera reporting a plus.

Robert Kekaula Fellowship

In memory of KITV4 Managing Editor and former News Anchor and Sports Director Robert Kekaula, KITV4 Island News is establishing a Fellowship in his name to carry on his legacy.

The Robert Kekaula Fellowship is a one-year program designed to encourage the next generation to be positive and important influencers as broadcast journalists. As an entry-level position, the RK Fellow will work in the KITV4 News Department learning firsthand how to produce compelling stories for the local audience and why that is important. The position is both technical and editorial – from writing, interviewing, and making good journalistic ethical decisions, to video shooting and editing, plus mastering the use of broadcast equipment and software programs. The fellowship will also provide a broad view of the many aspects of broadcasting by allowing the RK Fellow to spend time in every department in the station.

This is a paid, part-time fellowship. (20 hours/week; $15/hour)

The selected RK Fellow:

    • Envisions a future in broadcast journalism.
    • Should be Hawaiian or born and raised in Hawaii. (Does not have to be a current Hawaii resident to apply.)
    • Available to work on average approximately 20 hours per week and be flexible to work any shift, including overnight and weekends.
    • Must be a full-time student enrolled in college with current/completed work in Journalism, Broadcasting, or Communications.
    • High interest in news, especially local news.
    • May have had prior internships in related fields.
    • Must have an open mind with a passion for learning.
    • Must have a great attitude for taking feedback and direction.

KITV Island News is looking for a passionate, dedicated, and skilled Anchor who cares deeply about the community. KITV4 Island News anchors are solid and effective communicators who value the time and attention to finding and telling truths.  In addition to being on the anchor desk, the ideal candidate must also be a strong reporter willing to dig deep for answers and understand the value and importance of communicating with viewers on all platforms.  This is a position for a journalist, not just a news reader.

Strong writers make strong anchors, and the ideal candidate will take pride in a nicely worded script, whether it's a package, VO, or tease. The anchor must work well with producers in creating a memorable newscast, including writing, reviewing, and editing scripts.

Responsibilities:

  • Anchoring newscasts; may include platforms beyond broadcast.
  • Nights, mornings, weekends, and odd hours are to be expected; breaking news and big event coverage demands all hands on deck.
  • Always reporting to gather essential facts.
  • Attend daily editorial meetings; always ready to pitch story ideas and guide daily coverage
  • Daily contributions to KITV.COM and KITV social media platforms.
  • Represent the station at community events and on other related projects.
  • Help create a vibrant work environment with a positive and encouraging attitude.

Qualifications and Desired Skills:

  • 2-4 years previous experience as a News Anchor at a television/broadcast station.
  • 4+ years previous experience as a News Reporter
  • College Degree – preferably in journalism, mass communications, or film/TV.
  • Knowledge of the Hawaii television market and local culture is a plus.
  • Excellent interviewing skills with guests live on set and in the field.
  • Excellent writer who understands and follows AP Style
  • Computer literacy is imperative
  • Experience and/or desire to work on longer form reporting – series, specials, etc.
  • Knows how to be a team player and team builder.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Traffic Specialist supports the traffic operations for KITV4, ensuring that all commercial and programming inventory is managed in accordance with all corporate policies and procedures, FCC guidelines, and network requirements. The Traffic Specialist supports the Traffic Manager oversee logs, and work with sales and other departments to maximize revenue for the station.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain commercial inventory traffic system.

  • Work inventory to maximize all avails.
  • Ensure that inventory control runs correctly.
  • Ensure that daily program logs are produced in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain an accurate 13-week commercial avail projection.
  • Coordinate with sales by monitoring avails and informing sales management of current, future, or changed inventory and/or programming.
  • Inform and coordinate with General Manager and department head regarding programming changes.
  • Respond to Master Control to resolve any issues with logs.
  • Ensure accuracy of coding / rates for commercial orders.
  • Manage Wide Orbit formatting / program grid formatting.
  • Assist in creating & assigning materials to orders and applying rotations of commercials on air.
  • Implement fulfillment of affiliate, swap and syndicated contracts.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 2 years in radio/traffic experience or similar professional experience.
  • Experience with Wide Orbit strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with a high level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, maintaining a positive rapport with staff, management and clients.
  • Proven record of dependability and willingness to work some evenings or weekends as workload requires.
  • Capable and willing to resolve unexpected problems and be flexible to manage unscheduled changes.
  • A high level of proficiency with computers, software and new technologies.
  • Able to manage stress effectively.
  • Possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
