WXOW-TV is seeking a dedicated, high-energy Assistant News Director to lead our team of journalists in beautiful La Crosse, Wisconsin. We are looking for a leader who can manage daily content, mentor newsroom staff, and drive our "Digital First" mission while ensuring the highest standards of broadcast excellence.

The Assistant News Director is the primary on-site manager for the WXOW newsroom, reporting to the Regional News Director at WKOW-TV in Madison, Wisconsin. This is a critical leadership role responsible for the day-to-day execution of our news product across broadcast, digital, and social media platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

• Newsroom Leadership: Supervise daily activities of newsroom personnel, including reporters, anchors, and photographers. Manage scheduling, provide performance feedback, and foster a professional, high-growth newsroom culture.
• Editorial Oversight: Lead daily editorial meetings, assign stories, and coordinate coverage priorities. Ensure all content meets the highest standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and legal compliance.
• Breaking News & Weather: Rapidly coordinate the station’s response to breaking news and severe weather events, ensuring a continuous flow of information across all platforms.
• Newscast Production: Research, write, and produce daily newscasts. Work closely with the Madison-based producing hub and local anchors to ensure polished, timely, and engaging broadcasts.
• Multi-Platform Content Management: Oversee and contribute to the station’s digital footprint. This includes writing for the website, managing social media accounts, and ensuring "web-first" delivery of breaking stories.
• Operational Duties: Monitor scanners, develop community contacts, and remain available on-call for major news events.

Qualifications/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of experience in a professional newsroom. Previous management or leadership experience is preferred, but we will consider high-potential candidates ready for their first management role.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong understanding of broadcast law and ethical journalism.
• Ability to make fast, accurate editorial decisions under pressure.
• Proficiency in video editing and digital content management systems.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:


● Produce and deliver accurate, engaging, and understandable on-air weather forecasts for our morning newscasts.
● Cover severe weather events, providing continuous, life-saving information and graphics.
● Generate digital and social media content (videos, blog posts, graphics) to keep our audience informed 24/7.
● Collaborate with the news team to craft weather-related stories and special segments.
● Produce live and recorded weather updates for our valued radio partners.
● Maintain and update weather systems, ensuring the seamless operation of our forecasting tools.
● Represent WQOW at community events and station appearances.

Qualifications:

● Demonstrated knowledge of severe weather forecasting and climate trends in the Midwest is a strong plus.

WQOW TV 18 is seeking an energetic and experienced TV News Anchor/Producer to join our team for the Wake Up Wisconsin morning show. This is an exciting opportunity to be the face and voice that starts the day for viewers in our community.

The Anchor/Producer will be responsible for anchoring and producing WQOW TV 18's Monday through Friday morning show, Wake Up Wisconsin, which airs from 4:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. This role requires a dynamic on-air presence and strong journalistic skills to gather, write, produce, and present accurate and compelling news content.

Key responsibilities include delivering news clearly and in an engaging manner. The Anchor/Producer is also responsible for producing, which includes writing scripts, coordinating graphics, and monitoring show timing. You will also generate story ideas, conduct interviews, and report on stories as needed.
Good news judgment is a must, as is being a self-starter who has the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You must be able to work in an organized fashion under tight deadlines.

This is not an entry level position. Proven experience anchoring or reporting in a professional broadcast environment is required. A strong background in journalism, including familiarity with journalistic ethics and standards, is a must. Proficiency in newsroom computer systems (e.g. ENPS) and non-linear editing software is a plus (Edius).
