Chief Engineer

KWWL Television, Inc. is looking for a motivated individual with broadcast experience to join our team as Chief Engineer. 

The successful candidate will maintain the technical integrity of the station's broadcast and computer equipment. You will be responsible for overseeing repair and maintaining equipment both at the television station, transmitter, and in the field, including cameras, recording equipment, video servers, switchers, routers, satellite equipment, etc. 

The job requires strong IT and RF skills with the ability to troubleshoot, and problem solve. Live location ENG and production experience is preferred, but the team at KWWL will also train the right motivated candidate the skills needed to succeed. 

Accountability:

  • Supervise day-to-day operation of all master control operators and maintenance engineers.
  • Coordinate and staff all technical aspects of remote broadcasts and productions.
  • Oversee all maintenance and repairs on all technical, broadcast, and computer gear.
  • Develop recommendations and proposals for the implementation of new equipment and/or changes in procedure or applications of existing equipment.
  • Purchase all technical equipment and parts.
  • Oversee maintenance and operations of the physical plant including, but not limited to, heating, air conditioning, water, sewer, grounds, parking, roofing, and janitorial.
  • Ensure broadcast operations meet all FCC/FAA requirements.
  • Maintain logs; keep up-to-date maintenance records, reports, observations, and inspections.
  • Maintain and create documentation for station equipment and infrastructure.
  • Ensure plant and grounds are maintained, modified, and used in accordance with local fire, building, OSHA, City of Waterloo, State of Iowa, and federal regulations.
  • Schedule shifts for all technical maintenance, IT, and building/grounds maintenance personnel.
  • Act as consultant to the General Manager on technical budget and monitor expenses accordingly.
  • Represent the station at seminars and other events involving broadcast engineering, television, or other forms of data/information technology.
  • Process invoices for all operational and technical supplies, utilities, and service providers.

Qualifications: 

  • Electrical engineering degree or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum three years relevant experience in a broadcast facility.
  • Management training or experience is desirable.
  • Must possess physical ability to lift more than 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in cramped quarters.    
  • Must be capable of traversing rugged terrain at dish site and transmitter site for required maintenance work.
  • Physical ability to personally inspect tower site from the ground.
  • General Class FCC license, SBE, CET, and other broadcast/facility maintenance certifications are desirable.
  • Thorough knowledge of a typical broadcast television signal path, from studio cameras to transmission antenna.
  • Capable of analyzing and correcting technical problems.
  • Ability to communicate with department heads while supervising technical problems.
  • Speech and hearing abilities that allow for clear communication with department heads and technical personnel (verbally and in writing).
  • Must be able to read/respond to written safety messages, warning signs, and instructional manuals and ability to distinguish/maintain color constancy.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with vendors and manufacturer’s and service provider’s technical support.
  • Must be able to operate essential office equipment, including copiers/scanners, personal communications devices, image display devices, etc.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must maintain a cellular phone to be used for business communications.

KWWL-TV, the VHF Channel 7 NBC affiliate serving Eastern Iowa, is seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer with IT skills.

The engineering department is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and installation of all technology equipment in the television station, including video production equipment, automation, computers, servers, etc. This position reports to the Chief Engineers and will work closely with the IT Administrator to ensure smooth technology rollouts.

Requirements

  • High school and/or technical school graduate. College courses in electrical engineering or equivalent experience is desirable. 
  • Minimum two-year technical course related to broadcast electronics, including digital technology and IT, or two years’ relevant experience in a broadcast facility.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain all station equipment, fixed and portable, that is owned, operated, or serviced by the station.
  • Install or aid in installation of new equipment.
  • Assist the IT administrator with maintaining the local area network in a manner consistent with best practices.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer on any problems that arise beyond their capabilities and escalate any problems outside personal capabilities to the Chief Engineer.
  • Monitor supplies, parts, etc. and keep the Chief Engineer informed of inventory levels.
  • Respond to duties and tasks in support of sports, production, news, weather, programming, and others when needed.
  • Maintain logs; keep up-to-date maintenance records, reports, observations, and inspections.
  • Maintain and create documentation for station equipment and infrastructure.
  • Follow existing procedures for dealing with maintenance reports and equipment discrepancies.
  • Be responsible for grounds and building maintenance at the station.
  • Maintain on-going self-training and cross-training with other technical personnel.
  • Be available for on-call emergencies, especially in the absence of the Chief Engineer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
