Newscast Director/Master Control Operator - AM

KWWL, the NBC affiliate serving the 94th largest market is seeking a highly motivated Newscast Director for its award-winning, state of the art fast paced production and master control facility. This position is accountable for coordination and production of newscasts and cut ins within station guidelines in a manner that will attract the largest possible viewership. The position is also accountable for master control operations, including ingesting/timing out local content and monitoring automated playlists for three stations. We are looking for a multi-tasking candidate that supports our commitment to serving the communities of eastern Iowa.

Qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • High school and/or technical school graduate. College courses or equivalent experience desirable.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new programs quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Capable of analyzing and correcting technical problems.
  • Experience with video production desirable.
  • Familiarity with Ross Switchers, Ross Overdrive Automation, Ross XPression graphics system, Yamaha audio consoles, Harris/Imagine Master Control Automation a plus.
  • Knowledge of FCC requirements for broadcast facilities, including transmission and tower light monitoring/logging and EAS notifications a plus.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere, and Encore a plus.
  • Experience with lighting and set design a plus.

Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb tall ladders, move studio cameras, and set pieces.
  • Must have valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Vision, speech, and hearing abilities that facilitate a rapid response to changes during a newscast.
  • Possess manual dexterity to quickly move between various positions.
  • Must be capable of traversing snow-covered terrain to remove snow from satellite dishes.

JOB SUMMARY:  Deliver newscasts and/or report news and feature stories, blogs and other material originated by the reporter, or assigned by the editor, and read them accurately, clearly and concisely and in an engaging manner.   

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Build network of informational sources that will enable the Company to stay ahead of its competitors. 

  • Develop ideas for news, feature and enterprise pieces, as well as investigative stories. 

  • Collect and analyze facts about newsworthy events by interview, investigation, or observation. 

  • Gather accurate and interesting information for newscast presentations.

  • Organize material and write articles based on the details and information obtained.

  • Present clear, creative and accurate live shots. 

  • Produce accurate, complete and compelling news copy on deadline.

  • Use various social platforms to give updates as well as news stories to the public. 

Specialized Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent reading, writing, spelling, grammar and organizational skills. 

  • Promotes teamwork and maintains attitude of cooperation with all station personnel. 

  • Adept at ad-lib presentations, without aid of scripts and/or teleprompters.

  • Possess exceptional research skills.

  • Solid delivery, camera presence and clear enunciation.

Education/Experience: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field preferred, with minimum of (2) two years’ experience as news reporter. 

Work Environment/Mental/Physical Requirements: 

High stress environment with deadline pressures. Travel will be required on a regular basis. Position requires the transport of equipment weighing up to 60 lbs.  Position often requires work in extreme outdoor temperatures.

Editor/Photographer with a creative eye, technical expertise and a can-do attitude. The
successful candidate will be proficient in non-linear editing. You’ll also understand the
importance of visual composition, natural sound and quality lighting. The successful
candidate must be able to deliver great video on a daily basis in our very competitive
21-county market.
You must be able to work very early hours and/or very late hours under deadline
pressure.  Your primary job will be editing video for our newscasts. We use EDIUS, but
if you know Adobe Premiere, you’ll be able to pick it up quickly. You will also shoot
breaking news and other local news events. KWWL has Sony HD cameras, drones, a
satellite truck and several bonded cellular live backpacks to go live from almost
anywhere.
Our photojournalists are just that—journalists. If you want to write a well as shoot and
edit, do your own Facebook live reports or simply get more hands-on training in the
industry, we’re the place.
