FOX 55 Fort Wayne strives to maintain its visibility in the community, forming partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters of NE Indiana, the March of Dimes, and the American Heart Association.  In 2014, we formed a partnership with the Bounce TV Network, which targets African-American viewers, to televise their programming on our digital sub-channel.  In 2018 we added Antenna TV to another digital sub-channel, which includes the greatest hits of all time.

WFFT-TV FOX 55 – Fort Wayne, Indiana
Position: Technical Director  (Entry-Level)
Department: News (Production)
Employment Type: Full-Time

WFFT-TV FOX 55 is seeking a technically savvy, creative Technical Director for daily newscasts with a passion for high-impact visual journalism. This is an entry-level role—we will train a qualified candidate. The individual hired will learn all aspects of television newscast production (control room operations, switching, audio, graphics, studio) as well as professional news video shooting and editing for broadcast and digital. This is a behind-the-scenes role and is not intended as an on-air position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Direct/technical direct locally produced weekend news programs.

  • Collaborate with reporters, producers, and content producers to plan shoots, conceptualize stories, and execute creative vision using both video and natural sound.

  • Oversee the video library; assist with digitization and archiving to ensure accessibility and compliance with station standards.

  • Safely operate production and field equipment and follow established control-room workflows.

  • Other job-related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Entry-level; we will train a qualified candidate.

  • Must know the basics of how to edit video (non-linear editing); foundational skills acceptable with willingness to learn.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment under strict deadlines; remain calm under pressure.

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; ability to operate news vehicles/units. Background check required.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds of equipment when necessary.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written); strong organization and attention to detail.

  • Background and/or interest in core broadcasting workflows (control room, field production/ENG, master control) with the ability to operate or learn to operate essential production equipment and learn new systems quickly.

  • Must be willing to reside in the Fort Wayne DMA.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, broadcasting, communications, production or related field preferred, not required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with non-linear editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Edius).

  • Familiarity with operating digital video camera equipment.

  • Electronic field production (EFP) capability and strong creative visuals in live and recorded environments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

·        Provides engineering assistance with studio equipment support, transmitter maintenance, editing systems, field production and transmission of live/recorded events and programs

·        Documents technical problems and reports them to management

·        Performs regular maintenance tasks including repairs, equipment replacement, supplies, etc.

·        Maintains building needs and station vehicles

·        Oversees management of master control operators including recruitment

·        Active Directory management

·        Desktop support for local and remote users

·        Design, implement and maintain computer/network security policies

·        Work with corporate engineering and 3rd party vendors to configure, install and maintain switches, routers, servers, NAS and other hardware and software

·        Provide capital budgetary support and advice for selection and replacement of equipment

·        Must be available to work during breaking news situations, severe weather, new system integrations and updates

Qualifications & Requirements:

·        2-3 years of professional or broadcast experience

·        A bachelor’s degree in engineering, IT or related is preferred

·        Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA and other industry certifications are a plus

·        Strong leadership skills and ability to operate in high pressure situations

·        Commanding knowledge of broadcast video equipment and techniques

·        Ability to learn and adapt quickly to all work situations

·        Professional, communicative, highly self-motivated, and detail oriented

·        Physical ability to lift more than 50lbs., climb ladders and work in cramped quarters
